Scotty McCreery’s “Five More Minutes" Featured In Apple TV+ Movie "The Dink"

July 23, 2026

Entertainment Focus Country writes:

There are plenty of laughs in Apple TV+‘s new sports comedy ‘The Dink’ but for Country music fans, the film’s most memorable moment arrives courtesy of a familiar voice from North Carolina.

Starring Jake Johnson as a former tennis prodigy whose career has long since unravelled, ‘The Dink’ is, at its heart, a redemption story. Johnson’s character now spends his days working for his father at a struggling tennis club, with Oscar winner Ed Harris bringing plenty of gravitas as the hard-nosed dad. Set against the unlikely battleground of tennis versus the rapidly growing world of pickleball, the film could easily have been just another sports comedy. Instead, it finds surprising emotional depth in its quieter moments.

But it’s what happens when Steenburgen turns Johnson onto Country music that provides the film’s funniest scene.

Johnson’s character has made it abundantly clear throughout the film that he can’t stand Country music. So when Steenburgen insists he gives one of her carefully curated Country playlists a chance, he does so with more reluctance than enthusiasm. A few scenes later, everything has changed.

The film cuts to Johnson alone in his apartment, tears streaming down his face as Scotty McCreery’s modern classic ‘Five More Minutes’ pours through the speakers. He’s no longer just listening: he’s belting out every word, throwing himself into the lyrics and acting out the song’s most emotional moments with complete sincerity. It’s hilarious because of just how dramatically Country music has broken through his defenses, but it’s also strangely touching.

Anyone who has heard ‘Five More Minutes’ will understand why.

Since its release in 2017, the song has become McCreery’s signature hit, resonating with listeners through its simple but universal message about wishing life would slow down just a little. Whether it’s childhood memories, family milestones or loved ones we’ve lost, the song taps into emotions that almost everyone has experienced. That’s exactly why the scene works.

The joke isn’t that Country music is something to laugh at. Quite the opposite. The comedy comes from watching someone who has spent the entire film dismissing the genre suddenly discover just how powerfully it can connect with people. It’s a reminder that the best Country songs don’t just tell stories, they make us see our own.

For us at EF Country, it’s especially satisfying to see one of the genre’s defining songs given such a prominent role in a major Apple TV+ release. Rather than being used as background music, ‘Five More Minutes’ becomes a genuine plot point, revealing something important about Johnson’s character while delivering one of the film’s biggest laughs.

It’s another example of Country music continuing to find its way into mainstream film and television, not as a stereotype but as authentic storytelling. And if ‘The Dink’ sends a few viewers off to discover Scotty McCreery’s catalogue after the credits roll, that’s a victory worth celebrating.

Sometimes, all it takes is just five more minutes.
